- Mama Nobantu is the name most people call me. Nobantu is a Zulu name which means Mother of Humanity. My last name, Ankoanda, is a Ghanian name which means "Sleepless until the battle is Won". The definition of my name has become a life long journey to promote African Centered Education wherever I am. The first opportunity began with naming my son and four daughters African names during a naming ceremony shortly after their births. My daughters were home schooled with an African Centered school I founded in our home. They attended several other African centered schools I co-founded in East Palo Alto, CA. My degrees (BA, MA) did not prepare me for this mission. The Ph.D I will be receiving in June also did not prepare me for my passion of creating African Centered community schools. However, it did help me to further my belief that independent African Centered Education is the solution to educating children of African descent.
